A study has named Reading as one of the top five European cities, behind London, Paris, Vienna and Moscow. It is said to be “incredible news” for the town, which is the bookies’ favourite to gain city status next month.
The town beat UK cities including Cambridge, Edinburgh and Glasgow in the top 25 overall European cities chart, published in the Foreign Direct Investment.
The Executive Director at economic development company Reading UK CIC, said: “This is incredible news from Reading and a deserved recognition of our continued success as both an economic centre and a business capital.
To be named finalists behind the likes of London, Moscow and Paris is obviously a tremendous accolade but it is being named micro city of the future which really thrill us.”
Cities were ranked by an independent judging panel that used a mix of data and expert opinion to rank cities and regions which have the best prospects for inward investment, economic development and business expansion. There were submissions from 253 cities and 110 regions.
The Thames Valley was placed third in the UK, ranked 10th overall in region and placed fifth in the small regions and best in the UK small regions categories.
Reading remained in the top 10 of cities driving the UK economy in the latest Centre for Cities study and leading bookies have made the town favourite to succeed in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee bid for city status.
