Mental health has always been something that’s very close to our hearts and underpins a lot of the work we do in the local community. This mental health awareness week, we’re proud to share some of the work we do behind the scenes to promote employee wellbeing every week of the year.
Private health care
It is vital to us that our employees are not only content in their working life, but in their personal life as well. That’s why all of our employees benefit from private healthcare to ensure they are getting all the help they need beyond the workplace. Via our provider, Vitality, employees can access free one-to-one therapy sessions with a licensed therapist, free membership with meditation app Headspace, and free mental health resources to help them improve their mental wellbeing in a way that suits them.
Home worker yoga sessions
While working from home has been necessary to keeping us safe over the past two years, we understand the toll it can take on employees to be remote-working all day. We therefore introduced twice-weekly virtual yoga sessions at lunchtimes to encourage staff to take time out of their busy schedule to reconnect with themselves with half an hour of restful yoga.
Monthly one-to-one sessions
Every month, our managers hold one-to-one catch ups with each member of their team to check in on their wellbeing both inside and outside of work and their progress on personal and professional goals. By allowing employees a safe space to discuss their goals, progress, wins, frustrations, and concerns, we can ensure that they are remaining happy and fulfilled, and if there’s something making them unhappy, we can work out how to change that. That way, we’re able to not only get the most out of our employees, but make sure our employees get the most out of us.
We care about what our employees think. That’s why we send out a quarterly staff survey to get feedback on how we can better support their needs. From providing new equipment and upgrading staff chill out areas to closing our doors over Christmas, we’ve actioned a lot of employee requests over the years and proved that we really do listen.
Frequent socials, fun days, and team events
Microsoft Teams has been an invaluable tool to keep all our home workers connected over the pandemic, but we know better than anyone that it can’t substitute face to face connections! When meeting up face to face was not possible over lockdown, we held monthly home worker awards to celebrate the hard work of our home workers. At these awards, we did virtual horse racing, bingo, and even ‘Who Wants to be a Thousandaire?’ (see what we did there?).
As soon as we were able, we organised in-person socials like rounders and bowling to get our support team back together. Now, we fund team socials to give our departments a chance to unwind and bond outside of work. The socials vary from department to department, with our maintenance team opting for a spa evening while marketing chose an inflatable water obstacle course!
In the summer, we also hold a big family party to really thank our teams for everything they do and give back to the staff and their family. There’s always glitter face paint, a live band, a free bar, a bouncy castle and a rodeo bull – which is always more fun after a trip to the free bar!
Celebrating hard work
We hold quarterly and annual awards to celebrate the hard work and successes of all departments in the business. As well as giving our employees a sense of achievement and fulfilment, winners are rewarded with fun days and experiences that allow them to relax and enjoy a day out of the office. So far, this year’s quarterly award winners have been treated to a day at the races and an overnight stay in Dublin, and the lucky annual award winners will get an all-expenses-paid trip to Cancun or Vegas!
Our dedication to our employee’s wellbeing led us to consider how we could champion mental health beyond the business. We therefore decided to put a focus this year on raising money and awareness for mental health charity, Mind.
In April 2022, we raised £400 for Mind by organising Easter egg tombolas and easter egg hunts across our 11 offices. We also held a bingo game for employees at our quarterly awards, with huge success!
We are immensely proud to have not only promoted mental health awareness in the local community with our Easter fundraising events, but to have also helped Mind maintain their helpline for mental health support by raising the funds to cover four days of work from Infoline and Legal Line advisors.
Find out more about our April fundraising for Mind here.
This Friday, our staff will be donning their most colourful clothes to raise more money for the mental health charity – so keep your eyes peeled for some silly bright colours!
